Dear 4-1 parents and students,

This week’s cleanest desk competition winner was Gloria.  It was almost a tie between Andrew L and Gloria, but Andrew was not standing at the back of the room waiting like I asked everybody to do, so Lina chose Gloria.  Next week Gloria will be the judge.

We want to thank all the mothers for bringing snack on Wednesday and for coming to our open class.  I am only a little jealous the moms clapped after the Korean open class, but not the English one L.  Because detention has become a little bit of a problem, I have told the students that we will have a pizza picnic outside if they can go for five days in a row without a detention.  So far, they have not gotten even one day yet without a singe detention.

Here is this week’s coin question: What is the smallest country in the world, where is it, and what is its population?  There are three parts here.  This question should be easier than last week, but if you don’t try, you can’t get anything.

Reading

This week we finished reading “My Name is Maria Isabel,” and next week we will begin reading “The Baker’s Neighbor.”

Science

Our first science test was on Friday morning.  I was very impressed with how many questions each review team answered correct.  And judging by the test scores, everyone studied very well.  Here are the A’s in order: Claire(103), Gloria(102), Lina(102), Linda(102), Andy(101), Chenny(100), Louis(100), Andrew L(99), Sylvia(99), and Andrew G(91).  Jenny, Smith, Paulo, and Ryan all got B’s.  The average score was 91% this year.  Last year the average score on this test was 75%. In 2012 it was 74%, and in 2011 it was 83%.  I think we have a smart group of kids this year who also work very hard.  I expect good grades and studying from all of you now that I know what you can do.  Next week we will work on Earth Day posters in class.  Each student or group of students has chosen a topic to make a poster about.

Social Studies

Here are the South America test scores from last week. There were 4 A’s: Chenny(95), Andy(91), Louis(90), and Sylvia(90).  There were also 4 B’s: Claire, Smith, Jenny, and Lina.  Very good, students!  Next we will study Europe.  There are a lot more countries to learn in Europe, so we will not do capitals.  There were 5 students who needed to do retests because they didn’t remember the countries/capitals well enough, but on Wednesday the last two finally passed.  If you can pass the retest, why can’t you pass the real test the first time you take it?  Students presented their country posters this week.  I must say, I am rather disappointed.  Half of the teams did a very poor job finding information and will receive very low scores.  I will not post the scores or put many posters on the website because it is nothing to be proud of.  Next time, please do a better job.

Grammar

In grammar we are learning about comparative and superlative adjectives.  I am learning too, like who is the fattest, smartest, or prettiest in your families.  Remember “than” goes after comparative, and “the” goes before superlative.

Library

This week many more students read at least 15 minutes every day.  Gloria read for more than 12 hours and got five coins for all her hard work.  Good job, Gloria!
