Poetry is a fun, short unit. We read lots of fun poems and write many of our own. The class is introduced to my favorite poet, Shel Silverstein as we read through many of his poetry books. Our goal is to learn what poetry is. To find the answer, students will learn the different parts of poetry and all about rhyme. They will also each choose one poem to study and memorize. As our final project, every student will get one page of their own to write for our class poetry anthology book. Every page will have poems and reflections by the student author.
The first poetry book I owned as a child was this one. When I was in third grade I memorized a poem from this book and I can still recite it today.
This is one of the few poetry books not by Shel Silverstein that I enjoy. It's full of silly rhyming poems that kids love.
There are lots of poems I love from this book. We have the audio of Uncle Shelby reading his own poems that we will listen to in class.
I have my own poetry website full of poems (and a few songs) that I have written for kids to enjoy. Everything inspires me! Most of the poems are silly and goofy to make you laugh or make you think about something strange and different. Some of the poems have pictures, and some do not. If you would like to draw a picture for a poem you like on the website, send it to me. All of the pictures up there are from other students, like you! I will put your picture up there too! I'll leave you with a little sample from the website here:
Poetry is calming
Why don’t you write a rhyme?
It’s a peaceful way
For you to pass the time.
